Finding Keywords When You're Watching Every Dollar

Can you build a solid keyword strategy without monthly tool subscriptions? Here's what actually works when you're bootstrapping your content.
What's the autocomplete method?
Start typing your topic in Google and screenshot the suggestions. Then add each letter of the alphabet after your keyword. "Keyword research a", "keyword research b", etc. Tedious but free, and you'll find questions people actually ask.
How useful is Google's "People also ask" box?
More than you'd think. Each question you click expands to show more questions. Click through 10-15 times and you've got a content roadmap. These are real searches with enough volume that Google bothered to feature them.
Can I export data from free tools?
Most limit exports, but you can manually collect data. Create a spreadsheet tracking keywords, approximate volume from Google Keyword Planner, and competition level. Twenty minutes of copying data beats $99 monthly if you're just starting.
What about combining multiple free trials?
Technically works, but you're spending time managing trials instead of doing research. Better to learn one free tool well than juggle five trial periods with different email addresses.
